This song only recently got in my head after about 18 years of earworm absence. Back in the aughts I got into an 80s mood and made a mix CD of songs I heard growing up and songs I liked, and this song made the cut. I listened to it repeatedly for a while and then moved on to other mixes.
My first memorable encounter with this song was actually from the movie The Wedding Singer. It’s not that I hadn’t heard the song before–it sounded familiar to me as Adam Sandler sang it–but it’s the first conscious memory I have of it. Here’s a blurry YouTube video of Adam Sandler singing:
I first heard that back in high school on a school band trip to Florida. Did you know that at the end credits of the movie, they have 80s karaoke? Everybody sang to it on the drive down from Ohio. It’s one of my great high school memories.
Anyway…
Why is this song in my head now? Well, YouTube has been populating random stuff. Ever since I viewed Hayley Williams singing “True Believer” on the Tonight Show (which was a knockout performance) I’ve been getting Jimmy Fallon videos in my recommendations. I know he’s on everybody’s shit list right now for interviewing a rapist on his show–a good reason to be mad. I wish he didn’t screw up like that (or like how he normalized Trump) because I am one of the rare people who always found his show to be amusing. I have kind of a childlike sense of humor and so his antics always appealed to the goofy, kiddie side of me. But I’m mad at him.
However, back to the reason why it’s in my head: YouTube populated a video of Paul Rudd singing “You Spin Me Round” with Jimmy Fallon. Paul Rudd is really singing the song and he does a great impression! It’s pretty much a shot-for-shot remake of the original video, complete with Rudd glamming it up as Pete Burns.
This is a really old video (from 2019), but as I just found out about it a couple of days ago, I was quite impressed with it! I always get a kick out of hearing movie stars sing when you least expect it.
Anyway, after watching the Paul Rudd remake, that meant I had to go back to the original, which is what is now officially stuck in my head:
To be honest, you can’t beat the original. Despite all the different versions in my head, Dead or Alive’s song “You Spin Me Round” takes the cake. And…that’s what’s been in my head for the past few days.
Which song will be my next earworm? Who knows?
