Once a dancer of great renown, everything changed for Yol when he was branded a liar and sold to a brothel. Heartbroken, Yol abandoned his dreams and vowed never to dance for an audience again…

That is, until the day a distinguished Hybrid — one who shifts between man and beast — known as Amulan arrives at the brothel and purchases Yol for himself, offering “freedom” in exchange for Yol’s services.

Thrust into the lion’s den, Yol learns that beneath Amulan’s ferocity lies an unexpected tenderness — and an even more startling desire: that Yol return to the stage.

Content Warnings: Explicit sexual content, sex trade*, dubious consent, human-non-human relationship, mild fantasy racism

I think I found a BL that ticks off all of the specific, quirky things I enjoy in a manga:

  • Beautiful costume and character design
  • Men with long, gorgeous, flowing hair
  • Darker vibes
  • Dance
  • Fantasy animal people
  • Explicit, uncensored sex scenes
  • Being rescued from a brothel/life full of hardship

I didn’t realize I was that into animal hybrid fantasies until I read Sea Melt Lover and then did a recall of previous manga I own, which had cat people, merpeople, wolf-people, monsters, etc. So I guess that’s a thing I’m into, and this manga doesn’t disappoint–we have a beautiful lion this time.

The manga opens up with Amulan, a noble Lion-Human hybrid, appearing at a brothel looking for a specific prostitute: Yol. He doesn’t know him by name, yet–only from a memory of his appearance.

Amulan buys a night with Yol and they fill it with explicit sex. Then Amulan decides to buy Yol’s freedom, and takes Yol into his household, where Yol is technically a free man, but is still hoped to be/expected to be Amulan’s companion.

There is dubiousness to all of this. Amulan is really rough and animalistic in bed, and Yol can’t always handle it, so there are some protestations during lovemaking that go completely ignored. To be honest, I would’ve been more impressed with Amulan if he bought Yol and then later had willing sex with him, as opposed to starting their relationship completely based off of transactional or dubious sex first.

Anyway, despite Yol’s frustrations with Amulan and his lack of gentleness, there is another side of Yol that seems to be falling for him. He is conflicted even as Amulan further draws Yol into his world. Like, appearing in his lion form, for instance.

In the meantime, it’s clear Amulan is head over heels for Yol, and encourages Yol to do the one thing that used to make him happy: dance. Due to a rough childhood, Yol found joy in dancing, and even danced for a couple at their secret wedding…and then he was chosen to dance for a circus-like performing venue, on the lie that he was a Hybrid–a highly valued member of society that can change from an animal to a human, and vice versa. It’s quickly revealed that Yol can’t transform, and he is sold into prostitution as punishment. Yol feels incredible guilt for lying, and believes he doesn’t deserve to dance ever again.

So this story is all about overcoming the demons of the past and finding joy again in what was lost, or in this case, given up. Like all romance stories, there is a happily ever after to this one that feels sweet, and, now that we know Amulan and Yol clearly love each other after everything, deserved.

I gave this manga five stars because it just hit a very specific nerve in me.

And did I mention the costume design? Yol’s dancing outfit is both sensual and refined at the same time. There are more costume surprises in the manga later (specifically the bonuses), and it felt like it would be too spoilery if I shared all of them here. But the dancing outfit in particular is gorgeous.

To me, this felt like a unique manga for checking off the boxes to all the little quirky and overly specific things I enjoy when I read BL. This one just happened to have it all. I really enjoyed myself, and if there is ever a return to this world, I’ll be happy to journey there again.
