The world is infested by Kaigyo: fish that walk on land, eat concrete, and destroy buildings.

Their typical behavior is bizarre enough, but ten years ago, Jaytle Nish witnessed these pests become murderers while under the command of a mystery person clad in black, and eat his parents whole. He takes on a job exterminating the fish while looking for leads, but instead finds a strange woman eating poisonous kaigyo flesh.

From deadly fish to mysterious cultists, the odd duo will take on it all in this pop art-inspired revenge action series!

This is a bizarre manga, but it held my interest and made me want to learn more about this strange world full of concrete-eating killer fish monsters.

Jaytle’s parents were eaten by Kaigyo and ten years later, he is an exterminator while also trying to find out the mystery of who commanded the Kaigyo to eat his family. (Click the pics to enlarge).

Tragedy occurs with Jaytle’s partner (I don’t want to spoil it) but it brings back haunting memories to Jaytle, who vows to work even harder to figure out what’s going on. To make things more mysterious, he meets a strange nameless woman with amnesia in the middle of her eating the Kaigyo! She quickly joins the melee and starts fighting.

After the fight, she follows Jaytle along to his home where his aunt lives. Jaytle later names the mysterious woman Kasaco (for umbrella she carries, since that’s what she uses to fight Kaigyo), and the two agree to work together to kill all the Kaigyo, especially the big, man-eating ones. Anyway, the story continues where we meet more exterminators, visit a mysterious church that feels off, uncover a mystery of children going missing, and why more and more Kaigyo keep showing up.

As far as first volumes go, this one is intriguing and very fast-paced. Maybe a little too fast, because when sad things happen, I don’t have a lot of time to grieve. But that’s probably my only complaint. There is a setup here for things to go deeper emotionally (like with a character who is in love with Jaytle and it’s unrequited), but that’s for future volumes.

The art is unlike anything I’ve ever seen from a Japanese manga. If I attempted to describe it, I would say it’s a little bit of Panty and Stocking mixed with Scott Pilgrim, but I don’t even think that’s accurate. The characters are uniquely depicted–nobody blends together in the background.

I would like to know what happens next for certain, and if our heroes will ever solve the mystery of the masked figure who commands the Kaigyo to eat humans. If you’re into manga that’s really, really weird and unique, give this one a try.
