I love talking about costumes, and often when I choose my time period inspirations for my fantasy novels, I’m often thinking about the clothes characters wear. For example, the costumes in Son of the Siren were inspired by Tudor clothing, while The Darkening Gate books are all utilizing the time period known as the Regency.
I have blogged about costumes before–here are Lily’s clothes, and here are Andresh’s–but I thought I’d share what I did on Instagram, too, because it’s a little more succinct.
Here’s a snapshot of Lily’s style. She has reddish-brown hair and freckles across the bridge of her nose, along with pale pinkish skin. These are the colors I chose for her that I thought would look good with her hair.

Next up is Andresh’s snapshot. He’s got very pale white skin, sapphire-colored eyes, and jet black hair. He can wear more of a variety of clothes due to his coloring, but I wanted some more muted colors for him when he’s wearing Regency clothes and not his traditional Sindalian costume.

I showed these fashion boards to the artist Juhaihai, who I commissioned artwork from, and she settled on these colors for the character’s clothes:

I’m so pleased with their design. Juhaihai did an excellent job, and the clothing the characters wear in this art are very period-accurate.
What do you think of Regency clothing?
