This is sort of an AU Catholicism action-horror tale about Marian, who worships the Holy Mother of God as a goddess in her own right, not just a mother of the Lamb (nobody comes right out and says Mary or Jesus in this comic, but uses names that hint around it). Because the religion in the comic doesn’t accept worship of the Mother in that way, but only honors male gods like the Son and the Father, Marian is labeled a heretic, but interestingly also fights for the pseudo-Catholics by witch-hunting nightly in order to keep the members of her Sisterhood safe. Amid all of that, the witches, especially Ravenna, are attracted to Marian because they feel she too might be a witch, and the story focuses on abandoning beliefs or surrendering to them.

It’s a bit wordy for a comic and the tone is very epic sounding and official (which is perfect for the characters who are leaders in the comic book Catholicism)–everything sounds like a decree being given, or a prayer being made. This might not work for everyone, but I found it fitting.

The art is excellent, particularly in the opening sequence and fights scenes. I love the darker color schemes, too.
All in all, this makes for a haunting action piece that makes you want to question authority and the boundaries of belief. After all, what makes a god or a goddess?
