Well, winter is already here and we have plenty of snow where I'm at. But I was scratching my head for what to post the last Monday of January and did some searches for tags...this one seemed a lot of fun. It comes from ZeZeeWithBooks. Let's get to it!

Snow: It is beautiful when it first falls, but then it starts to melt.

A book/book series that you loved at the beginning, but then, at the middle of it, you realized you don’t like it any longer.

This was a recent nonfiction read I DNF'd. It was really interesting--about neurological anomalies in people--but there was a lot of reflective commentary when I just wanted to get to the stories of the patients and not listen to the doctor ramble. I would've kept going but my concentration pooped out. It's a good book but I don't know if I'll go back to it.

Snowflake: Something beautiful and always different.

Choose a book that stands out, that is different from all the other books you’ve read.

This is a horror novel (more than a horror novel) set in Florida in the Jim Crow South, where segregation is rampant, injustices abound, and racism is out of control. A young Black boy kicks a white boy who was making moves on his sister, and he is sentenced to six months to the local boys' reformatory, a place with a nasty reputation. It's also haunted. In this book, mysteries abound, family love endures, and there are genuinely spooky moments. The tension is also incredibly high in certain places. I had to take a brief break from reading because I thought I'd gnaw my arm off from the tension! Anyway, this was so good. It was my first five-star book of the year.

Snowman: It is always fun to make one with your family.

Choose a book that a whole family could read.

This is just a wild guess on my part as this was kind of difficult for me to come up with a response. But I chose Witchlings because I've heard nothing but good things about it. It's a middle grade novel that's also a series of books, and I can picture a parent and a child reading it together easily. To be honest, I'd like to read it at some point, too.

Christmas

Choose a book that is full of happiness, that made you warm inside after reading it.

While there are dark topics in this book (abuse, murder), this is a delightful novel from someone becoming one of my favorite authors: T. Kingfisher.

Santa Claus: He brings wonderful presents.

Choose a book that you’d like to get for Christmas.

Well, Christmas came and went, and I treated myself to the special edition boxed set of Hannah Whitten's novels For the Wolf and For the Throne from Hachette (better known as the Wilderwood Duology). Thanks to obsessively watching BookTube and scrolling through Bookstagram, I've started to eye special editions and exclusive editions of books. I need to be careful.

Snow bowling: It can be painful to be hit by a snowball.

Choose a book that hurt, that made you feel some strong emotion like sadness or anger.

I think my first real emotional read was Columbine, which I read when it came out way back in 2009. It's a difficult book, but a necessary one.

Sledding: We all loved it when we were younger.

Choose a book that you loved when you were a child.

This was a foundational text for me. The illustrations scared the crap out of me, the stories drew my imagination into overdrive, and the book cemented my love of horror at a young age.

Frostbite: Choose a book that you were really disappointed in.

I purchased a YA horror anthology whose motif was rooms inside a haunted house. One story would be the attic; one would be the bedroom, etc. It was a really cool concept but the stories ended up being "meh" and I DNF'd it.

Reindeer: Something that is dear to us.

Choose a book that is of great sentimental value to you.

The picture is of the first book in the series, but I'm shouting out the entire series as something sentimental to me. There are five books out (I don't know if more are coming or not because I haven't read the fifth one yet!) and the story and art are so beautiful.
