This tag comes from We Write at Dawn. Do you have bookish secrets to confess? I do! And here's where I lay it all out for you. Enjoy!

Which book, most recently, did you not finish?

I'm not going to hide this one because I went back and made myself finish it! But for about two weeks I DNF'd The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat because I felt uncomfortable with how the author referred to his patients. The terminology is insulting, outdated, and disrespectful. To the author's credit, he did write an introduction years later that admits the wrongdoings of the language, but he opted to leave everything in as it was written forty-so years ago. I'm not for censorship or changing things, but the price of leaving insulting language in is that the reader may get a bad taste in their mouth. Plus, I was more interested in the patients' neurological situations as opposed to the author's long meditations on their condition. So...I did a lot of skimming and skipping.

Which book is your guilty pleasure?

I really like hardcore, dark BL sometimes. When I lived in Japan, I picked a bunch of it up (without knowing how to read almost all of it). The Japanese title of this series is 陵辱! 潜入捜査官 while the English on the cover (don't know if it's correct) is Insult Undercover Investigator. I was able to figure out on my own about the manga being about detectives, and the main character gets absolutely tortured, humiliated, and a lot of other bad things happen to him. This series is quite explicit and I managed to snag all three books. I don't know if more volumes will come out, but I think it ends at three. This is totally a guilty pleasure because if you don't know the genre (or even like it) you'd probably call this "trashy." But I kind of love stuff like this.

Which book do you love to hate?

There's a book that I can remember because of its beautiful imagery in terms of winter and darkness and forests, but the story itself and the overall writing of it was terrible. I made it all the way through, but I find myself often hating on this one because it had a lot of potential...it just seemed like the author enjoyed the sound of her own voice.

Which book would you throw into the sea?

Since this is an old book, I'm not going to hide it. The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway just felt like an exercise in pointlessness. I had to read it in high school and it was very hard for me to get into. I don't remember anything it's about except an old man hunting a marlin. If there were themes, symbolism, etc. it was all lost on me. We even watched a movie of it to try to help us and the movie was boring, too.

Which book have you read the most?

I don't actually reread books. I read this book one time but I consult it repeatedly, especially when I'm overthinking my plot or feel directionless and need a spot check.

Which book would you hate to receive as a present?

The hype around The Empyrean Series, beginning with this book, is starting to wear me down to the point where I might actually cave in and read this. But I've watched a lot of deep dive criticism and read reviews and this book, and...not my cup of tea.

Which book could you not live without?

I'm afraid I have to go with a series: Heaven Official's Blessing. It's soooo good! I want to write something big, epic, and romantic like this!

Which book made you the angriest?

Ghosts of the Tsunami made me cry, but it also made me angry, due to the lack of preparation and misguidance during the evacuation procedures for the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Almost an entire elementary school was wiped out due to a simple miscommunication and misdirection, walking directly into the incoming waters.

Which book made you cry the most?

Same book.

Which book cover do you hate the most?

Although the reasoning behind the choice to use this image is sound, I just detest this cover. What an ugly expression.
