What do you look forward to every week?

There are different ways I like to have fun (which is what I look forward to) but I think the biggest one of all is curling up with my Kindle and reading BL. I read translated BL on my Kindle Fire and original Japanese BL on my Kindle Colorsoft. If I'm not napping, that's what I look forward to every week.

My favorite BL manga author and artist is Meguru Hinohara, who has many works translated into English, and then my runner up would be Wataru Nagi, who, unfortunately, has only Japanese releases (I'm hoping for English someday!).

There are many theories as to why women in particular gravitate towards BL, but in my case, it's the following:

  • The men are beautiful

  • The beautiful men are naked

  • The stories vary from dark to light, comedy to tragedy, deeply romantic to silly and flirty

  • I like the couple dynamics (usually)

When I first started reading BL back in 2012 I kept it secret. I felt very ashamed because of how sexually explicit they can get and like it or not, I'm a bit of a prudish person. But I found myself loving the stories and the art. Right before I left for Japan, I started coming out and expressing my love for the genre. Then, when I made it to Japan, I felt fully accepted in my love for BL--I met people who also read it and loved it; bookstores stocked it; and there was no shame. Now I openly admit to reading it and proudly display my BL on my bookshelves.

Note: Tanoshimimashou means "let's have fun" or "looking forward to it." That's your Japanese lesson for today!
