Welcome to the afterlife…may we take your bags? Hijinks and heartbreak await as this fan-favorite online comic becomes a gorgeous graphic novel!
After awakening in the middle of nowhere, a young man is forcefully inducted into the Hotel Limbo as its new bellboy (“BB” for short). Faced with magical masks, giant cats, a mysterious staff, and a hotel that just won’t sit still, BB will soon learn that helping with “baggage” means something very different when all the guests are dead.
In this series debut, writer Ben Harel teams up with 28 artists (!) from around the world to breathe life into a story about death. As comedy dances with drama and mystery, every tonal shift and blurred line is accentuated by an ever-changing visual style, creating a genre-bending medley of deadly (and death-ly) adventures.
I enjoyed Hotel Limbo quite a bit, and loved the concept of incorporating the work of over twenty artists to tell a unique story about a strange kind of pseudo-life after death. Though each artist had their own style, the chapters worked together rather seamlessly and characters didn’t change, down to their most important details. The entire comic works together visually on the whole.
Now, let’s get to the story.
There’s an interesting prologue about stories interweaving between a child who grants wishes and a young man who becomes a bell boy at a hotel in purgatory. Book One pretty much focuses on the bellboy, though we are warned that the stories of these two different characters are connected by a thread. This got me interested in what was happening right away.

We’re plopped right into the Hotel with BB, the nickname for the Bell Boy (real names can’t be used in purgatory), and a cast of characters are quickly introduced. At first, because of the masks that people wear (though not everybody does), and the strangeness of the environment, BB thinks he’s stuck in cult, and doesn’t realize he’s dead yet. He’s just trying to get used to his cat mask, his uniform, and his predicament.

The first employee we meet from Hotel Limbo is the Boss, who gives a short introduction, and then we meet a slew of characters rather quickly.

All BB knows is that his new role is that of Bell Boy to the hotel. He’s supposed to take people’s bags, but not everyone lets him, and he comes to find he has the power to see the dead’s emotional baggage, so he tries to help the newly deceased out when he can to resolve their issues at or before death.
It’s a really interesting premise and I liked that we got to see a couple guests’ stories with that, though not everything turns out right for BB and the people he helps. The last story where BB tries to help a woman find her lover blows up in everyone’s faces.
The story ends on a mystery and a cliffhanger surrounding one of the Hotel’s employees, Mix (the bartender, who doesn’t wear a mask). Just with that, I’m interested in knowing more.
This is a creative, entertaining comic and a great start to what is a weird, funny, and possibly emotional story (based on how the groundwork is being laid). I’m rating this four stars and look forward to seeing more from Hotel Limbo.
Hotel Limbo (Book 1) will release April 14, 2026 from Top Shelf Productions, although there’s still time to preorder. You can also order the comic from a wide variety of book retailers online.
