A steamy new BL one-shot about a businessman longing to reunite with his past lover–who wants nothing more than to put his own troubled past behind him.

Kanzaki is your typical businessman: He’s stoic, dependable, and respected by all of his subordinates. But he has a secret he can’t tell anyone: Five years ago, he became involved with a male sex worker named Nagi. The more nights they spent together, the more lust gave way to love, and Kanzaki hasn’t been able to get Nagi off his mind since. After being sent to work abroad, Kanzaki returns to Japan and meets one of his new subordinates–a young man named Futagami, who looks exactly like Nagi. As the part of Kanzaki’s past that was once frozen in time begins to thaw, can the two men find their way back toward each other, or will the passionate nights they spent together remain a thing of the past?

This mature BL manga has an air of wistfulness and tragedy about it, but as with all romances, ends with the genre-promised HEA, which made me happy to read this book and see things come out alright between Kanzaki and Futagami.

They start out as the couple Kanzaki and Nagi, and Nagi is a sex worker at the time they begin their relationship. But soon love develops between the two, until Kanzaki is transferred to work in Malaysia, and he lets their relationship fade on its own.

Nagi wants to forget about his past relationship, his past sex work, and start life brand-new. He becomes an office worker for the same company Kanzaki happens to work for, and when Kanzaki returns from Malaysia, he recognizes Futagami as Nagi immediately. (From now on I’m going to call him Nagi just to keep things easier).

Nagi blows Kanzaki off, and Kanzaki is heartbroken. He struggles with trying to treat Nagi as a subordinate at their company, but also, he can’t forget their passionate nights, expressions of love, or the ring Nagi gave him before Kanzaki left. But he doesn’t know what to do–he still desires for Nagi to recognize him and hopes that love can be rekindled.

Nagi, in the meantime, is dealing with severe trauma from his past profession. After Kanzaki left for Malaysia, Nagi kept underperforming, and then not performing, when it came to sex. He just couldn’t feel pleasure anymore. He lost all of his clientele and money. He doesn’t consider himself smart or talented, but he desperately tried his best to get into the company, and works hard to stay there, despite making mistakes sometimes. He is worried recognizing Kanzaki will jeopardize everything he’s worked for. And…he is still hurt by everything that happened between them in the end, and just wants to move on.

Only…Nagi finds his lust returning thanks to Kanzaki’s presence. The attraction is coming back! But Nagi’s trauma from prostitution has him convinced he is only wanted for his body, and for sex. Kanzaki does what he can to try to persuade him otherwise, that his feelings are of love, and nothing else.

The trauma that Nagi has to work through in order to welcome Kanzaki back into his life is what makes this story sad for me–I really feel for him, including his confusion and apparent lack of trust and self-esteem. Kanzaki is ever the gentleman, and despite some close calls, gives Nagi his much-needed distance when he can, and tries to maintain a senpai-kohai relationship. Of course, this ends up not working out for either of the two, and love does blossom.

It takes a while for the two to be completely on the same footing when it comes to their relationship, but I’m glad the two can overlook the negatives of the past and start fresh with each other, all while honoring their memories. The two did have good times together before, after all. But there’s a feeling of optimism when they finally get together, and it makes me want to support their relationship.

If you’re looking for a more emotional BL that focuses on the past, mistakes, trauma, and forgiveness, I would give this one a go. The art is lovely, the sex scenes are uncensored and well-drawn, and the characters and story are memorable. While the idea of a sex worker and office man falling in love might seem awkward at first, it’s treated quite seriously, and the story works. I am happy to recommend this one to BL fans of mature romance.
