Today is Indie Author Day! Let’s celebrate!
But first–what is an indie author?
The definitions have changed and are still kind of nebulous. The dominant interpretation of “indie author” is an author who is self-published…someone who works independently from established publishing houses. However, that doesn’t account for the older definition, which meant authors who publish with independent and small presses.
In this way, it’s kind of confusing as to who we can determine to be an “indie author.” Both definitions are accepted, but not all the time–there really is a push to define self-published authors as indie.
However, according to the inclusive definition of indie, I count as an independent author! My publisher is Oliver Heber Books and they are an independent, small press. But don’t let that description fool you–OHB has some major names associated with it, like Kerrigan Byrne, Carrie Anne Noble, Jeff Wheeler, Tanya Anne Crosby, Maggie Shayne, Charlie N. Holmberg, and Sherrilyn Kenyon, to name a few. The fact that I am a part of their author roster kinda shocks me to this day. I’m so grateful!
If you want to celebrate Indie Author Day and help me personally, you can read my debut YA fantasy novel Son of the Siren and subscribe to this website, where I give updates and go behind-the-scenes for my forthcoming trilogy from Oliver Heber Books, The Name and the Key. I also have a monthly author newsletter!
I also recommend checking out the works of other independent authors, too. Here are a few of my faves (and if they aren’t independent, I apologize. Sometimes it’s hard to tell if a published book is self-pubbed or not).
